Coined: in 1812 by by the French physician de Gardanne using the term  'La ménespausie”,  which he subsequently shortened to menopause in 1821 (De Gardarne De la Menopause, ou de l’Age Critique des Femmes, 1821, Paris, France: Meguignon-Marvis)
Definition:
Menopause represents the permanent end of menstruation which marks the end of a woman's fertility.
